ConnectiXX is one of those great puzzle games that is both easy to learn, and challenging enough to stay interesting. At its heart, it’s a simple game – you have a set number of dots that you need to connect with lines. Each dot must have a specific number of lines attached to it to complete the level, and none of the lines can cross.

In the beginning, this is an easy task. Dots only need one or two lines, three at most, and there aren’t so many that finding a way to connect them without crossing is fairly easy. But as you progress through the levels, there are greater numbers of dots, requiring greater numbers of lines. And the challenge of connecting them without crossing anything gets pretty complicated.

One thing I loved about the game is that the levels aren’t “locked”. In other words, you don’t have to solve a level in order to access the next one. You can skip ahead if you get stuck, and go back to a level later. For me, this was a huge part of what kept it interesting. when I started getting stuck, rather than get frustrated at being stopped in my tracks, I just moved on. And most of the time, when I went back later, I was able to see the solution that I missed the first time. It kept the game feeling fun, while at the same time challenging me to look at things in different ways. In addition, the game tracks your total time to solve all the levels, which you can improve by going back to a previous level and solving it again, but faster. This gives you a great incentive to keep playing through levels you cleared already.

The only issue I had with the game was a bit of a freezing problem every now and then when loading levels, and it forced closed out on me once. It wasn’t happening often enough to get really irritating, but enough to be worth mentioning, at least. With luck, that glitch will be fixed in a future update.

Fun Factor:

For as simple as the game is, it’s surprisingly fun. It’s challenging enough to keep you interested, while the ability to skip and return to levels that have you stumped allow you to play without getting frustrated, which is something I usually hate about brain teaser games.

Addictive:

I found myself going back to play just one more level on more than one occasion, so I’d rate this as pretty high on the addictive scale. I was having fun moving through the levels, and I liked that I could play a level or two while out and about when I had a few minutes, instead of having to sit and commit a chunk of time to it.

Graphics:

The graphics follow the “doodle” style, with a graph paper-like background and text and pieces made to look like they were written on the paper. For this game, it worked, since it’s a simple concept.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

The game doesn’t use or need the accelerometer or vibration since it’s a brain teaser puzzle game. The soundtrack was turned off by default, which was something I have to admit I really loved. For games like this, I want to play them sitting on the couch watching TV during commercials, or standing in line at stores, where you don’t really want to suddenly have a loud soundtrack blasting out (I have my device volume turned to high, usually, since I use both my phone and tablet as music players as well).

Huebrix is a fun yet mesmerically challenging puzzle game. Simply put, you have to fill the grid with colour but dragging your finger from each block. Avoid obstacles, utilize special blocks and work your way through loads of levels. If you have played and enjoyed Flow Free, this will be right up your street.

The game features a simple design that is actually polished and contains plenty of animation, despite its bold, flat colours. This gives it a minimalistic look despite Huebrix being a very polished and very well designed game. Level construction is extremely good and it will take a bona fide genius to work through the full version of the game with some 400 challenging and complex levels.

If you enjoy the game but find yourself getting a little stuck here and there, you can find comfort in the hints system which gives you clues as to how to complete the level. That said, it’s not an easy game. However, if you find even the more complex puzzle games on Android a little too easy- this sets you a tough challenge.

Noodlecake Studios are developing somewhat of a pedigree in the Google Play Store in terms of puzzle titles. If you enjoy Huebrix, be sure to also check out their slick and beautifully designed Trainyard.

Fun Factor:

If you like challenging puzzles and mind-numbing conundrums, you will love Huebrix. Solving the later levels is incredibly rewarding and lots of fun.

Addictive:

Once you start the puzzles, it is actually quite difficult to put the game down. Huebrix really puts your logical faculties to the test and is highly engrossing.

Graphics:

The visuals are simple but very well designed and smooth. I really like the bright colours and the slick animations. The levels get progressively tougher and the simple theme lets you get on with solving the puzzles without being flamboyant and distracting. The whole game is very minimalist yet polished.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

Despite the simple graphics, the music and sound is polished and of high quality. It might be considered a little bit ‘spacey’ and futuristic, it’s also relatively mellow and relaxing. Which is good if you use the game as a way to unwind.

100 Rooms is a game incredibly similar to the likes of 100 Floors, which we reviewed a while ago. The premise is simple- each level requires you to solve a puzzle of some kind in order to progress. The point of 100 Rooms is to escape each room by opening the door. Each room is unique and offers a very different challenge from the one before.

You explore by tapping the left, right up and down arrows on screen, plus tapping items to pick them up. You can combine items by highlighting them and this often leads to discoveries which help solve the puzzle. For example, using a key on the locked door or an axe on some wooden boards to get at what is behind them. I did find some levels terrifically tough- especially those where you have to move in certain directions in a set order, or collect a very specific numbers of things. Much of gameplay is trial and error.

These kind of games always get lots of online attention, especially from addicted gamers hungry for solutions. Subsequently, it doesn’t take long to find forum and blog posts which give you the hints you need. While this is clearly cheating- it does help if you’re pathetically stuck! The other way of getting hints is buying them in-game using coins. You can earn coins by playing the mini games. These appear in the lobby screen and get you to quickly identify silhouetted images in a set time. The more correct images you select the more coins you win.

Fun Factor:

These games are very popular in the Google Play Store and iOS, so I think you probably already know if you like these kind of brain-teasers.

Addictive:

I think the game takes the position that you already love this style of puzzle game so doesn’t beat around the bush with simplistic early levels. From the first room it is very tough and you’ll rely more and more on hints as the game progresses. If you’re completely new to the genre, this might overwhelm you a little. That said, if you’re a veteran of such games, this will leave you as engrossed and as mentally taxed as anything else you’ve played.

Graphics:

The graphics are very simple, but that is part of the games charm. Essentially you have still images of different room views and close-ups of found items. You can occasionally zoom in a little to view things closer, but the game will automatically let you do that if you tap on an area.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

The game features very minimal sound- just the odd click here and there.

I have to admit up front, I’ve been a fan of this franchise since it first came out, and I’ve played it across several platforms now. So I was excited to try it out on Android as well.

First off, it’s worth noting that while the game is free to download and install, and you can play for a short time, if you want to progress you have to pay via an in-app upgrade. You can pay a small fee to unlock a single character class, or a larger one to unlock all the classes. I paid to unlock them all, and to be honest, looking back, I’d probably have gone with the smaller amount to just do a single class.

I love the game – when it works. It’s a great game with the same unique battle style that the first one had, with a bigger story line and more side quests. However, the catch is when it works. On my Galaxy Tab, I had a lot of problems with force closing. It would load and either I could play for as long as I want with no issues, or it would force close every five minutes. As much as I love the game, that frustration really started to kill it for me. I wanted to sit down and play, but after all the force closures, I’d get frustrated and walk away, and then, after a while, I found I didn’t even necessarily want to bother trying, since I didn’t know if I would get to actually play or not.

When it did work, the game is a lot of fun. It has RPG elements, so you’re following a story line, fighting increasingly difficult enemies. You level up, which gives you better stats, and access to better spells. Each time you level up, you can choose to use points in a variety of stats, giving you the ability to customize your character to your own style of game play.

The spells you use in Puzzle Quest’s system of combat – at its base, it’s like Bejeweled, where you match gems of the same color, or skulls – gems give you that color in your bank, and skulls do damage to your enemy. The gems you collect can be used in your spells – some allow you to collect greater amounts of certain colors, others do damage to your foe, and still others cause various status effects. Each job class has its own set of spells, so playing through the game multiple times with different classes requires adjusting your strategy.

You also earn or buy items such as equipment or spells that allow you to effect how your character’s stats work. Other items allow you to upgrade your equipment, giving you even more flexibility. The system isn’t as robust as what you would find in a MMORPG like a World of Warcraft of Guild Wars, but for a stand-alone game, having the basic elements of crafting was a nice touch. There are also various achievements to earn, for completing tasks and side quests, exploring, etc.

Fun Factor:

When the game works, it is amazingly fun. I spent hours playing when it was working. However, when it doesn’t work, it becomes very frustrating. You spend more time loading, then having it crash to the desktop, then waiting for it to load again.

Addictive:

Again, when it works, there is so much here that there’s a lot to keep coming back for. Between the game play, the story line, the side quests and achievements, there’s a little something for everyone.

Graphics:

Because this is a port from a DS game, then to the iPhone, before it came to Android, the graphics are beautiful.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

There is no vibration or acceleration, but the soundtrack is a very RPG-like affair, with all the variations you’d expect.

Blockster is an enjoyable and rewarding puzzle game that rewards fast reflexes. At the bottom of the screen are four drums; green, blue, red and yellow. In a game board not dislike Tetris, blocks descend from the top of the screen reflecting those colours. To remove the colour, simply tap the drum which matches. There are three modes of differing play:

Beat

Here gamers remove rows of blocks from left to right. Levels start off really easy- rows of one or two colours, then it gets trickier by mixing these up more and more. The game is over when the blocks (of which rows are continually added) reach the bottom of the screen. There are more than 100 levels to work through with 4 different themes: Snare Zone, Floor Zone, Crash Zone and Drums Zone.

Endless

In Endless mode, individual blocks fall from the top of the screen and you tap the corresponding colour to remove them. As the game progresses, blocks fall faster leaving you less time to respond. The game is over when a block hits the bottom of the screen.

Reverse

Reverse mode turns gameplay on its head. Similar initially to Beat mode, rows of blocks descend from above. Each row will only be made up of three different colours. Gamers have to tap the missing colour to remove the row. This requires an entirely different kind of skill as you have to quickly identify which colour is missing and tap it. Rows fall much faster here than in Beat mode.

Blockster is stupidly addictive. It taps in that part of your consciousness that just reacts to the environment. You instinctively tap the coloured drums until you just can’t keep up any more- it’s insanely hard to resist. It’s such a casual game too, easy to pick-up-and-play, meaning it’s perfect for the odd few moments you might get to play a game. The three modes of play are refreshingly different from each other and they all offer completely different challenges.

While the gameplay is excellent, there are a couple of things that let the game down. On some screens there is a back icon in the top left hand corner which takes you back a page (your hard back button will make you leave the game altogether). On others it’s invisible- I only discovered this by experimenting. On others still, like the Mode page, it doesn’t exist at all so you have to use the hard back button which makes you leave the game entirely.

Additionally the music isn’t great. Obviously this comes down to taste, so I imagine some people might like it, but it really wasn’t for me. It’s an oppressive simulated jazz clarinet with accompanying drums and bass which just grated my teeth. What really sucks is that there’s no setting to turn it off- meaning you have to turn the volume down on your device to remove it. These minor issues, however, do not really detract from the compulsive gameplay and riveting challenge it presents.

Fun Factor:

Music switched off, Blockster is lots of fun. It’s ultimately very rewarding too- there’s loads of levels to progress through in Beat mode so there’s lots to play.

Addictive:

Highly! The blending of casual and instinctive gameplay, simple controls, lots of levels and three different modes make the game easy to pick up, but hard to put down.

Graphics:

The graphics are very simplistic and certainly nothing to write home about, but they work with the gameplay to provide a vivid and visually engaging game.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

There’s no accelerometer or vibration to speak of, but the music is pretty bad in my opinion. Additionally, each drum has its own sound and you receive regular notifications that you’re doing well. I personally just wished that there was a way to turn off the music but keep the sound effects.
